Aleppo soap contains laurel oil which is very expensive and not easy to buy, so in the video below I’ll show how to make a very simple olive oil soap. Please do exercise caution as Sodium Hydroxide is very caustic and WILL BURN if you get it on your skin. If this happens wash thoroughly with cold water and seek medical advice.
- 990 grams olive oil
- 270 ml of water
- 127 grams Sodium Hydroxide (also known as caustic soda or lye)
- Approximately half an hour preparation time
You can find other soap making calculators on the internet, for example here. You can buy soap making moulds such as this one from many online shops. Sodium Hydroxide is available from many places, the less expensive ones supply larger quantities. Cleaning supply shops are a good source.
Example of an Aleppo Soap recipe:
200g water, 500g olive oil, 500g laurel oil, 131g NaOH, giving about 1.3kg of soap before curing
